Ders içeriği

This course provides a detailed analysis of Pompeii and Herculaneum, two Italian cities in the Campania region of Italy buried by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Re-discovered in the 18th century, excavations at both places have provided much evidence regarding the art and architecture and the everyday life of the region in the Republican and early Imperial periods. The first part of the course will examine the history of both cities up to the time of the eruption in AD 79 and will introduce you to their public and private architecture. The second part will examine in more detail what these sites tell us about everyday life there at the time of the eruption, and in particular the ways in which the residents lived, worked and played, which will allow you to better conceptualise patterns of life in the two places in the period between c. 150 BC - AD 79.
