A survey of art, architecture, and archaeology of the Mediterranean and Near East in the medieval and early modern periods, from Constantine the Great to the 15th century. Focus will be on the art and architecture of the Late Roman and Byzantine empires in Italy and the eastern Mediterranean basin and of early Islamic states.

- Background: Roman imperial art and architecture. The rise of Christian art. The Catacombs of Rome; wall paintings of Dura Europus (Syria).
- From Constantine to Theodosius (4th century). Architecture: Old St. Peter's (Rome) and the basilica. Church of the Holy Sepulchre (Jerusalem); Constantinople, the new imperial capital.
- Pictorial art in the late 4th century: the Missorium of Theodosius I; the obelisk base in the hippodrome (Constantinople). Architecture, late 4th-5th centuries: Constantinople, Kanlı Divane, Alahan, and (in Syria) Qalat Seman.
- Rome and Ravenna: architecture and art in the 5th-6th centuries.
- Sixth century: the age of Justinian. Constantinople: Sts. Sergius & Bacchus, Hagia Sophia, Great Palace mosaic. Ravenna: San Vitale. Egypt (Sinai): St. Catherine's monastery.
- Pictorial art: illustrated manuscripts, 4th-6th centuries. Iconoclasm (726-843).
- Islamic art and architecture, 7th-13th centuries. The origins of Islamic art. Umayyad art and architecture (late 7th-mid 8th c.).
- Abbasid art and architecture (mid 8th - 13th c.).
- Midterm examination.
- Contemporaries of the Abbasids: Muslim Spain; Fatimid Egypt; Iran and its neighbors.
- Mİddle Byzantine art and architecture. Hosios Loukas. Illustrated manuscripts. The mosaics of Hagia Sophia.
- Middle Byzantine church decoration: programs of mosaics and wall paintings. Hosios Loukas, Nea Moni (Chios), St. Sophia (Kiev), and Dafne (near Athens).
- Byzantine influence in Venice, Norman Sicily, and the Balkans. Eastern neighbors: Armenians and Georgians.
- Late Byzantine art and architecture. Kariye Camii (Constantinople).
